Last night I went to SIFF Uptown for The Roses — and I’m still processing it. This new take on The War of the Roses is part razor-sharp satire, part emotional gut-punch. Jay Roach delivers a film that’s both hilariously biting and deeply uncomfortable in all the best ways.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are phenomenal together — a powerhouse pairing that makes you laugh one second and wince the next. The film peels back the glossy veneer of marriage, ambition, and status to reveal something much darker and more fragile underneath.
It’s a story about power dynamics, about how quickly love can sour into rivalry, and how sometimes the most elegant homes hide the ugliest battles. I walked out of the theater thinking about ambition, relationships, and what happens when envy creeps into the cracks. If you love your comedies dark, your dramas sharp, and your acting unforgettable — The Roses deserves your attention.
