Last night at SIFF Cinema Uptown I watched Maddie’s Secret, and I honestly wasn’t prepared for how much this film would surprise me. The trailer makes it look like an outrageous satire about influencer culture, and it absolutely is. John Early is hilarious as Maddie, a dishwasher whose quirky cooking videos suddenly launch her into internet stardom, complete with sponsorships, carefully curated perfection, and all the pressures that come with living your life online. But beneath all of that is a film with an enormous amount of heart.
What impressed me most is how confidently it shifts between comedy and genuine emotion. One minute I was laughing at the absurdity of modern food influencer culture, and the next I was watching a painfully honest portrayal of someone struggling to maintain an impossible image while quietly battling an eating disorder. John Early somehow pulls off one of the year’s most fearless performances. The comedy is wonderfully over-the-top, but he never turns Maddie into a joke. Instead, she feels completely human, flawed, vulnerable, and deeply sympathetic.
The supporting cast is fantastic too, especially Kate Berlant, whose chemistry with Early gives the film so much warmth underneath all the satire. Watching it at SIFF was the perfect experience. The audience laughed constantly, but you could also feel the room become incredibly quiet during the film’s more intimate moments. Funny, bold, emotionally honest, and unlike anything else I’ve seen this year.
