Film Friday: Steal This Story, Please!

Last night at SIFF Cinema Uptown I watched Steal This Story, Please!, and it’s the kind of documentary that starts with one subject and opens into something much bigger. On the surface, it’s about storytelling, who gets to tell a story, who gets credit, and what gets lost when real lives are turned into public narratives. But underneath that, it’s about memory, identity, power, and the uneasy line between inspiration and appropriation.

What I appreciated most is that the film doesn’t flatten the issue into easy heroes or villains. It lets complexity stay complex. Through interviews and layered perspectives, it shows how truth can shift depending on who’s speaking and what they stand to gain. Watching it at SIFF made it even stronger. You could feel the room reacting in waves, laughter one moment, reflection the next. A smart, timely documentary that keeps the conversation going after the credits.
