Film Friday: The Bride! ๐Ÿ’€

Last night I caught The Bride! at SIFF Cinema Uptown, and itโ€™s one of those films that feels both classic and wildly modern at the same time.

Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, this reimagining of the Frankenstein legend takes the familiar story in a completely new direction. Jessie Buckley plays the Bride, a woman literally created by science but determined to figure out who she actually is. Alongside Christian Baleโ€™s brooding Dr. Frankenstein, the film explores identity, autonomy, and the strange, chaotic process of becoming human.

What struck me most is how visually bold the film is. It leans into a gothic aesthetic but layers it with a strange, almost punk energy. The world feels haunted and beautiful at the same time, like an old myth thatโ€™s been cracked open and rebuilt for a new era. Watching it at SIFF with a full crowd made it even better. You could feel the audience reacting to every twist, every moment of dark humor, every emotional beat.

Sometimes the best film experiences come from stories we think we already know, told in ways we never expected.
