Last night I had the absolute pleasure of sinking into a piece of cinematic history: Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, now dazzling in a crisp new 4K restoration at SIFF. It’s more than a samurai adventure — it’s wit, tension, and sly humor woven into breathtaking black-and-white landscapes. Watching it with an audience, you can feel why this film sparked imaginations worldwide (yes, even George Lucas took notes!).
For me, it’s the balance of grand narrative and small, human moments — the stubborn peasants, the fierce princess, the gruff general — all clashing, conspiring, and sometimes just surviving. A timeless story about unlikely allies and the messiness of loyalty. If you get a chance to catch it on the big screen, do it — you’ll see why Kurosawa still holds the crown.
