Last night I headed to SIFF Cinema Uptown for The Invite, and this one had me thinking about how quickly a seemingly harmless evening can go completely sideways. Olivia Wilde directs this sharp relationship thriller about two couples whose carefully controlled dinner party begins to unravel when old tensions, new attractions, and buried secrets start making themselves known.
What I really enjoyed is how the film plays with the idea of intimacy. You can know someone for years and still have absolutely no idea what they’re thinking. Put two couples together over dinner, add a few uncomfortable questions and a little unresolved tension, and suddenly every conversation feels like it’s carrying a second meaning. Wilde keeps the atmosphere increasingly uneasy without losing the humor. There’s something wonderfully uncomfortable about watching people try to maintain polite conversation while you can practically feel the tension building underneath the surface. And that’s what makes The Invite work for me. It’s not simply about what happens during one dinner. It’s about relationships, boundaries, desire, jealousy, and the things people choose not to say.
Seeing it at SIFF was a lot of fun because the audience reacted to those uncomfortable moments together. There were plenty of laughs, but also those wonderful stretches of silence when everyone in the theater is waiting to see what happens next. It’s the kind of movie that makes you look at your next dinner invitation a little differently. Maybe don’t ask too many personal questions. Or maybe do.
