Last night I headed to SIFF Cinema Downtown to experience The Odyssey in glorious 70mm, and if there’s ever been a film that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible, this is it. Christopher Nolan has built a career around creating cinematic events, but The Odyssey feels different. Instead of exploring the future or bending time, he reaches back thousands of years to retell one of humanity’s oldest stories. The result is breathtaking.
Matt Damon delivers a compelling Odysseus, portraying him not as an untouchable legend but as a man driven by determination, exhaustion, and an unwavering desire to return home. Every challenge along his journey feels earned, making the emotional stakes just as powerful as the spectacle. The supporting cast is equally impressive, bringing depth to familiar mythological figures while allowing the story’s timeless themes to remain at the forefront. Adventure, loyalty, sacrifice, temptation, and resilience all weave together into a film that feels both ancient and remarkably contemporary.
Visually, it’s astonishing. The 70mm presentation gives every landscape incredible scale, making oceans, mountains, storms, and battlefields feel truly immense. Nolan’s commitment to practical filmmaking creates a sense of realism that’s increasingly rare in blockbuster cinema. Watching it with a packed SIFF audience reminded me why theatrical moviegoing still matters. There were moments of complete silence as everyone became immersed in the journey, followed by collective gasps during the film’s most breathtaking sequences. Whether you’re a fan of Greek mythology, epic adventures, or simply great filmmaking, The Odyssey deserves to be experienced on the largest screen you can find. It’s a spectacular reminder that some stories remain timeless because they continue to speak to every generation.
