Last night at SIFF Cinema Uptown I watched The Power Ballad, and honestly, it reminded me why music-centered films can hit so hard when they get the emotional side right. At its heart, this is a story about reinvention. About people looking back at old dreams, old versions of themselves, and trying to figure out what still matters after life has taken them somewhere unexpected. The film has plenty of humor and charm, but what stayed with me most is the sincerity underneath it all. It understands that music isn’t just entertainment. A song can become a memory, a turning point, a reminder of who you used to be, or who you’re still trying to become.
There are moments that feel funny, moments that feel bittersweet, and moments that feel surprisingly personal. The film balances those tones really well without ever losing its heart. Watching it at SIFF made it even better. You could feel the audience responding together, laughing one minute, then settling into the emotional beats the next. A warm, entertaining film with a lot more depth than I expected.
