Last night at SIFF Cinema Uptown I watched Time and Water, and it’s one of those documentaries that quietly settles into your thoughts long after you’ve left the theater. This isn’t a film built around dramatic revelations or urgent narration. Instead, it invites you to slow down and pay attention. To landscapes. To history. To the way water shapes not only the physical world around us, but also our memories, communities, and sense of place.
The cinematography is absolutely stunning. There were moments where I felt like I wasn’t watching a documentary so much as sitting inside a living photograph. Every frame feels deliberate, patient, and deeply connected to the film’s themes. As someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, whether it’s kayaking, hiking, or just finding a quiet stretch of shoreline, I connected with the film’s appreciation for the relationship between people and the natural world. It understands that places aren’t just locations. They become part of our personal histories.
Watching it at SIFF felt like the perfect setting. The audience seemed completely immersed in the film’s rhythm, letting the images and ideas unfold naturally. Beautiful, thoughtful, and surprisingly moving.
