Film Friday | Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme

Last night I sat down for the latest Wes Anderson fever dream—and wow. The Phoenician Scheme is everything you expect (and don’t) from his colorful brain: razor-sharp dialogue, visual symmetry that makes you want to rewatch frames like paintings, and a cast so stacked they practically form a Hollywood constellation.

Beneath the saturated pastels and covert comedy, though, there’s a surprisingly poignant commentary on surveillance, identity, and the farce of diplomacy. I won’t spoil anything, but a monologue delivered through a pastry-ordering intercom had me both howling and squinting back unexpected tears.

If you’re a fan of The Grand Budapest Hotel or The French Dispatch, this one fits right into that lineage—only this time the stakes are espionage, not etiquette. Go for the humor, stay for the unspoken ache tucked behind every arching brow.
