During the weekend, I headed out to Marymoor Park for something completely different, a night under the stars watching 1,200 drones turn the sky into a moving canvas inspired by Harry Potter. I’ll admit, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I’ve seen fireworks plenty of times, but there’s something completely different about watching hundreds of lights move together above you, creating recognizable characters, scenes, and shapes while music fills the air.
The show started after dark, and once the first formations appeared overhead, the whole crowd seemed to go quiet. For a little while, everyone was looking up. No phones. No conversations. Just that sense of wonder you get when something genuinely unexpected happens above your head. The live electric violinist added another layer to the evening, with the music from the films accompanying the drone formations. And yes, I may have gotten a little nostalgic.
As a writer, I’m always interested in how atmosphere changes the way we experience a story. Put the same scene under a bright afternoon sky and it feels completely different than it does beneath a dark sky filled with hundreds of glowing lights. By the time the show ended, I was still looking up. Some nights are meant for mountains. Some are meant for the water. And apparently, some are meant for a little magic.
