During the weekend, I decided not to chase a mountain summit or load the kayak onto the Jeep. Instead, I gave myself permission to slow down and spend the morning wandering through Fremont with nothing more than a good cup of coffee and a notebook. As writers, there’s always this temptation to believe inspiration lives somewhere far away, hidden on a remote trail or across a body of water. But sometimes it waits in ordinary places, a quiet bookstore aisle, a neighborhood cafΓ©, or a conversation you overhear while pretending to read.
I spent the morning moving from one independent bookshop to another, running my hand across shelves full of stories written by people who probably started exactly the same way, sitting somewhere with an idea they couldn’t ignore. Between stops, I grabbed another coffee and walked along the canal, watching cyclists roll past, kayakers drift through the water, and locals enjoying one of those perfect Seattle mornings that feels too good to waste indoors.
My notebook slowly filled with fragments of dialogue, random observations, and ideas that may never become novels but might someday become something worth writing. The best part was that nothing on the schedule demanded urgency. Sometimes creativity doesn’t arrive because you chase it. Sometimes it catches up because you finally slow down.
