During the weekend, I drove north out of Seattle for one of my favorite escapes, the Goose Rock Trail at Deception Pass. The air was cool and salty, the kind that wakes you up the moment you step out of the car. The trail climbs steadily through quiet forest, cedar and fir filtering soft coastal light. Somewhere above the trees, the wind carried the distant sound of waves threading through the narrow channel beneath Deception Pass Bridge.
When the path finally opened at the summit, the view stopped me cold. Islands scattered across Puget Sound like stepping stones, water shifting from steel gray to deep blue as the clouds moved overhead. I stood there longer than I planned, letting the wind clear my head. Sometimes the best reset is simply distance from the city and a reminder that the Pacific Northwest still holds wild places just beyond the highway.
