Weekend Wrap: Kayaking Portage Bay & Montlake Cut

This weekend, I traded my desk for a paddle and set out on one of Seattle’s most beautiful kayaking routes — from Portage Bay through the Montlake Cut. The morning was pure Northwest magic: glassy water reflecting the summer sky, the hum of boat traffic, and the occasional curious heron watching from the reeds.

Paddling through the Montlake Cut is an experience that never gets old. There’s a rhythm to it — the quiet moments in the still stretches of water, then the sudden bustle as you pass under the bridge, waves bouncing you just enough to keep it exciting. From there, the bay opened up to reveal a skyline that reminded me exactly why I live here.

It’s not just about the view, though. Being on the water forces you to slow down, to match the pace of each paddle stroke, to really be present. If you ever need to hit reset, this route is worth it — the mix of urban and natural beauty is unbeatable. Seattle, you’ve got my heart. 💙
