During the weekend, I got back out on Lake Union with a kayak, and it felt like stepping into a version of myself I hadn’t visited in a while. The water was calm, just enough movement to remind you to stay present, to adjust, to move with it instead of against it. The skyline stretched out in front of me, softened by that early spring light Seattle does so well, cool air, quiet sun, and just enough warmth to stay a little longer than planned.
There’s a rhythm to kayaking that pulls everything else into the background. The repetition, the sound of the paddle cutting through water, the stillness between strokes. It gives you space to think, or not think at all. By the time I made my way back in, I wasn’t carrying the same weight I’d brought with me. Sometimes that’s all you need, a few hours, open water, and a reset.
