During the weekend, I swapped hiking boots and my kayak for a lawn chair and spent the evening at one of Seattle’s favorite summer traditions — a concert at Woodland Park Zoo. There’s something different about live music outdoors. Maybe it’s the fresh air, maybe it’s the setting, or maybe it’s the way everyone seems to leave the rush of everyday life at the gate. Whatever it is, it makes the experience feel more personal.
As the sun began to dip behind the trees, people spread out picnic blankets, shared snacks, caught up with friends, and settled in for the show. The atmosphere was relaxed from the very beginning, with laughter and conversation blending into the sounds of instruments being tuned on stage. Once the music started, the whole evening seemed to slow down. Surrounded by towering trees, warm summer air, and a crowd simply enjoying the moment, it reminded me that some of the best memories don’t come from grand adventures — they come from ordinary evenings shared with good people.
As a writer, I couldn’t help but notice the little moments around me. Friends singing along, couples dancing barefoot on the grass, families laughing together, and strangers smiling at one another between songs. Those are the moments that find their way into stories. By the end of the night, I headed home with a few new songs stuck in my head, a notebook full of ideas, and another reminder that summer in Seattle is something special. Sometimes the soundtrack to a great weekend is simply live music under the stars.
