Sometimes you need a paddle far from the skyline. This weekend I traded city noise for the quiet wonder of Rattlesnake Lake — just forty minutes from West Seattle but a world away. Morning mist lifted off the water as I set out, Alex perched in the bow, and the only sounds were the drip of the paddle and the call of a lone heron. By the time I pulled up to shore, the sun was glowing over the Cedar River Watershed and a dozen new story ideas were already swirling. Days like this remind me why I live in the Pacific Northwest: solitude and beauty are always within reach.
